Susan M. Bankston, MD, FAAP

Dr. Susan M. Bankston is a living example of how to balance a professional career with a personal life and involvement in the community. As a native of Baton Rouge where she spent her childhood and teen years, she has fully embraced all that Baton Rouge is and has to offer to those choosing to call the capital city their home.

Earning her B.S. in Zoology from LSU in 1984, she embraced her love of children and their healthcare and went on to earn her M.D. from the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport in 1988. She performed an internship in Pediatrics at Earl K. Long Hospital in Baton Rouge from 1988-1989 and then performed her residency in Pediatrics at the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport from 1993-96. In 1996, the year she started at The Baton Rouge Clinic, she joined the American Board of Pediatrics and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1998. Licensed in the state of Louisiana, she holds certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Bankston has served as former President of the Capital Area Medical Society and the Louisiana State Medical Society and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has served on the Board of Directors of The Baton Rouge Clinic and is on The Baton Rouge Clinic’s Executive Committee. Additionally, Dr. Susan M. Bankston has served on the Board of Governors of the Louisiana State Medical Society. She has also been appointed by two Louisiana Governors to the Louisiana Emergency Certification Commission for a total of three terms.

Civically, she is a sustaining member of the Baton Rouge Junior League and is a member of the Florida Boulevard Baptist Church. Many of the Baton Rouge area residents may be familiar with her as she appears monthly on WAFB TV 9 in Baton Rouge, offering a health information and wellness program appropriately titled: “House Calls with Dr. B.” She has also participated in seven Medical Missions to Central America bringing her unique spirit of caring to the people of that part of the world.

Amazingly, she does find time to enjoy all that the Baton Rouge area has to offer. She is an avid LSU football fan (Geaux Tigers!), ballroom dancer, traveling, reading, scrapbooking, and horseback riding. She is a member of the Bengal Belles and was a “STAR” for Dancing with Big Buddy. She is a member of the Krewe of Artemis in Baton Rouge and a member of the Krewe of Iris in New Orleans.

Dr. Susan Bankston has been chosen as the Runner-Up of Baton Rouge Parents Magazine’s Family Favorite Pediatrician for 2023! She has previously won this award in 2020. The awards are held annually through Baton Rouge Parents Magazine, and all nominations are submitted by readers around the Baton Rouge area. Thank you to all who participated!
